Are you a person who plans the day ahead, or are you someone who goes with the flow and reacts to the situation?
Have you ever experienced that sometimes you are running like a headless chicken with endless activities for your children, spouse, relatives and friends? Running to the extent that you feel rather resentful towards all those demands? I have been there…and I know exactly what it felt like!
I recently had a conversation with a mum, who is constantly tired and constantly agonising about the “lack of time!” I asked her the reasons; she mentioned that on top of her work, her children are participating in many after school activities. She is out of the house from morning till dusk.
By the end of the day, she just can’t run a household. It is just not sustainable! Furthermore, how much do the children benefit from the many activities?
If you can relate to that, ask yourself the following questions:
Questions That Need to Be Raised
- Will your children be exhausted from the activities and be unable to concentrate on their school work?
- Do you have time to enjoy quality family time together?
- Is there a limit to how many activities your children do after school?
- What are they aiming to achieve by the end of the day?
- Is this the lifestyle you want?
- Are these activities sustainable?
- What does your family budget look like?
As much as you would like to support your children, does it make any sense to support your children doing four or five different activities? Imagine how many practices the child has to do after school. On top of that, think about the amount of extra curriculum fees you have pay.
Would it be better if the child chose two activities and participated fully in them? Not only will the children have more time to rest at home and also to concentrate on other more creative things, the parents can enjoy more time with their children.
In most cases, we just have to slow down, connect with self and prioritise.
