Let’s ask ourselves this question: how well do you know your child? Do you know their likes and dislikes? Their fears? Their needs? Their favourite colour? Their favourite show?
The most important foundation that you can lay down with your children today is the connections that you have with them. All your future communications, interactions and your relationship boils down to how connected you are with your children.
The more you are aware of your children’s feelings and thoughts, the more equipped you are to understand their state of mind. Understanding their feelings means you can guide them to deal with their day to day issues and challenges.
When you are really connected to your children, you are aware of their being, the tone in their voice, the language they project, the body language they display, the energy they project…. More often than not, by asking one or two questions, you will be able to gauge their state of mind through their answers, body language and the tone of their replies.
And from their responses, you are able to sense whether you need to pursue the matter further. If you are still not satisfied with the responses, prompt them with a few more questions at a suitable time, and pursue further if you need to.
That’s why I am all for communicating, communicating and communicating with your children. The more conversations that flow between you and your children, the better you know and understand your children.
Steps to connect:
- Have regular conversations and interact with your children every day.
- Open up conversations; share your day and thoughts with them.
- Learn about their fears, their joy, their likes and dislikes.
- Understand their characters as well. Every child is different.
- Involve them with your daily activities.
- Make an effort to spend more quality time with them.
The more you converse and share, the better you understand your children, and you become aware of their ‘being’.
