Have you ever said or hear your children say “I HATE” this? Or I “hate” doing this, I “hate” doing that…
I know, I say that myself; for example, I said “I hate doing house chores…” It is true, I really do!
However, I know, in everything you do in life, there is a choice. I can either get someone to help me with the chores or I will have to do it myself.
I have a choice!
For example, if I chose the latter…what sort of mindset do I have to adopt in order for me to get rid of my “I hate it” vocabulary?
I read a segment from Burt Goldman – If you want to change thought, change your attitude!
OK, let’s give it a GO!
You can change something unpleasant in your life to that of a positive nature. So for example, I dislike doing house chores, and so I would dread it, hate it, procrastinate about it…but I still have to do it right? If I have to do it, I might as well be “happy” doing it…
So I took the following steps:
- Instead of looking at the house chores as a “chore”, I take it as my weekly exercise.
- Set a time limit – instead dragging it along for 1-2 hours, I want to finish it within 30 minutes.
- I would switch on nice background music.
- I have a vision of what the end result would be – workout & cleaner home.
- Set the challenge and GO!
So every week, I would set the half-hour challenge, power up the music and GO!
What does this exercise tell me and everyone?
By using this method, you can change your attitude to get yourself out of an unpleasant situation and turn it into a positive one. You can also use this method to help your children to change from procrastination to encouragement and enthusiasm.
Give it a go and make it fun for them. Instead of them studying, tell them it is acquiring new knowledge and learning something new, or instead of cleaning their room (a chore), tell them to clear and make room for the “good” energy/”fung sui” and exercise, instead of “eating vegetables”, say it will boost their energy and brain power…
