The level of conversation with your children depends on the connections you have with them. For example, you can’t expect to have an in-depth personal father-to-son conversation with your 16 year old son when you were hardly home or were not really involved with their day to day activities.
The quality of your conversation lies with the level of trust and respect you have for each other. The more respect and trust they have with you, the more they will open up to you as they value and trust your advice.
All children, big or small, will need guidance and advice. Parents, or a special aunt or uncle, are the closest adult confidant the child will ever have. Children naturally would love to be able to confide in you, share their journey with you and listen to your wisdom.
Trust, Respect and Unconditional Love
So in order to have that connection with your children, you will have to build the basic foundation – Trust and Respect. Like any relationship, trust and respect are the core foundation, and that applies to friends. However, for family, you add another component to the equation – UNCONDITIONAL LOVE.
To have a loving and supportive family, you need to establish trust, respect and unconditional love within your family. Your family will need to know they can trust and feel safe when they come to you for advice – irrespective of what situation they are in.
These three parts – trust, respect and unconditional love – are how you can establish a great connection with your children. Connections with unconditional love lead to great conversations with them. And this building of trust, respect and unconditional love takes time and energy – so make some time and start connecting with your children.
