We buy strawberries in small plastic containers called a punnet. I bought this big box of strawberries from our local fruit shop for $7.00 a box. It was a quick tray sale. It was definitely a bargain… so with 12 punnets of strawberries, what can you do with them?
From a box of strawberries, there are so many things you can do and have fun with your children. I call it fun, because you can get your children to start thinking about what they can do if they were to buy the strawberries? And think of the fun eating them!
Make it FUN, you kids will really enjoy the challenges they come up with…
So something fun to encourage your children thinking:
- What can you do with these strawberries? It is a great day to get them thinking … can you eat them just like that? Can you cook them and make something with the strawberries?
- Can you give some away to family and friends?
- Can you eat them all by yourselves?
- Will they share? Or eat them themselves?
- Can you make jam with them?
Listen to your children's answers and guide them to think a bit more.
Maths questions:
- Young Children – how many punnets of strawberries are there? Count with their finger?
- What is the shape of each punnet of strawberries?
- Older children? How heavy do you think each punnet of strawberries is? Don't read the numbers yet, just get them to hold and estimate.
- How many strawberries are they in the each punnet?
- If each punnet is Xgrams, and based on the number of strawberries in the punnet, how heavy is each strawberry?
- A further challenge… If 12 punnets cost $7, how much is each punnet?
- Now COMPARE the big box with the individual punnet of strawberries that the shop sells separately… which one is cheaper? And by how much? (if your children need to use the calculator, please do so)
Language
- Now find other vegetables or fruit that are red in colour in the shop and name them.
- How many types of fruit and vegetables can they find? This is a great challenge, as it gives them the opportunity to focus on the FUN challenge.
Remember, children develop and learn at different stages, so be patient and… most importantly, make the challenge FUN! Remember children learn through fun!
Have a pleasant day with your children.
