Doing something together is a fantastic way to create opportunities to connect with your children, and one of the many ways is spending quality time connecting through a book – reading.
Reading together creates a secret space between parent and child; sharing a story together makes a great bonding session. This is especially so if a parent is very busy and does not have many opportunities to connect with the child. Even 15 minutes of reading together gives the parent and child the opportunity to share a common story, imaginations, feelings, and thoughts while snuggling together. This will help the parent and child to rekindle the emotional closeness and appreciation of their time together.
Through the many stories you shared together, you can always start a conversation with your child by saying: “Remember the dragon that escaped?” “Remember that story about the wolf…?”
Your child will treasure this special time together, and looking forward to more stories and to sharing experiences together with you.
Empowering the love of reading and learning
On top of that, through the stories you are reading, you are effectively laying down the foundation of the love of reading for your child. While connecting with your child through stories, you are empowering your child with the love of exploring new vocabularies, improving his or her grammar, expanding their knowledge of the world, and encouraging creativity and imagination at the same time.
In addition, through the colourful illustrations in the books, the child will be able to associate the illustrations and the story he/she is reading, while connecting with his or her own personal experiences that he/she is currently going through.
Have fun connecting with your children through reading together. How often do you read together with your children? Share your feedback with us below.
