This is something that is really fun and a great way to connect with your children and family. Many years ago, I remembered when my children were in lower primary school, the school used to coordinate Father’s Day and Mother’s Day stalls where each student was to bring in a gift for either the Mum or the Dad for about $2 worth. Then they pool the gifts together until the special day.
On that day, each class would visit the stall and purchase a gift with a gold coin and gift wrap the gift for the parent. Guess what used as gift the wrapper? Yes – their own drawing and writing.
This blog is inspired by that idea – create your own gift wrapping paper for Christmas.
What you need:
- Blank piece of white paper – similar to the ones from the deli
- Paint and brushes or coloured pencils / pens
- Whole heaps of patients and creativity
Get your kids to create for each relative, such as grand dad, grandma, dad, mum, sister, brother … Get their creativity going, think about what’s special about that person, what they love doing together…
If your child prefers, he can cut and paste recycled Christmas wrappers and add to the painting. For those older GoKids, how about add some wordings onto the drawing paper, like “Merry Christmas”, “Have a blessed Christmas”…
What are the benefits of involving your children in this activity?
- It gives your child the opportunity to explore the creativity within them and express them through arts
- It allows your child to explore and identify his or her feelings about that person, how they feel about that person
- It allows your child to create a special connection through the feelings and thoughts
As I’ve always say, when you make something for someone, whether it is food or handmade craft, it is always made from careful thoughts and love – and a very special way to connect with that person.
Give it a go and have a wonderful time connecting with your children.
