How many times have you heard your children say, “I am bored”? Have you ever wondered if the word ‘bored’ really exists?
I know I have an endless “to do” list to fill the day. My “to do” list is often more than I canpossibly handle, and I am sure yours is too. So why do you think your children would sometimes tell you they are bored?
Let’s think for a minute, under what circumstances would you personally be feeling “bored”?
Take some time and think about it, and put yourself in their shoes.
Think about:
- What does “bored” mean?
- Under what circumstances would you actually be feeling bored?
- What bores you?
- How would it feel like to be bored for an hour or two?
What are your answers?
Could it be…
- You are not finding the task at hand challenging?
- You are not enjoying what you are doing?
- You need some attention?
- You have no direction on what you want to achieve?
What are your answers?
How can you translate that to your child’s circumstances? Ask yourself why and under what circumstances would your children be feeling bored?
Have a think about it. In the next article, we will look at how you can help your children to “outgrow” the “I am bored” syndrome.
