Emigrating to a new country is a very emotional and important decision. There are so many things that you have to think about, which country to move to, when to move, and where to live in that country, and school selection for your children is one them.
If you migrate due to your spouse's work, that will take a lot of hard work off you. Usually your spouse's office would have provided your family with accommodation, schooling etc.
However, no matter whether your child's schooling is organised or not, all parents I am sure will place high importance on whether the school/s you choose will be suitable for your children. You may want to do further research of schools around the area and what they have to offer etc.
Here are some ideas on what to look forward when it comes to a decision on schools:
- Private or public schools
- Co-ed or single sex schools
- School's religious affiliation
- The facilities
- The opportunities for parents to be involved
- Your child's needs
- The school where your child's friends are going
- Class sizes
- The school's teaching philosophy, such as some schools have a strong academic focus, and some focus more on sports etc.
- Location – whether you would like to drive, walk or take public transport to school etc.
Practical steps for school selection:
1. Write down your criteria
- Does you child have special needs?
- Do you prefer a local public school or private school?
2. Most schools will have their philosophy posted on their website or their handouts
- Visit the school's website, download the handbooks and gather the information.
3. Visit the open day (where possible)
- Talk to friends who have children attending the same school.
- Make an appointment with the school and organise a tour with them.
- Talk to existing parents; even talk to them when they drop off their children or when picking their children up after school.
- Attend their P & C meeting where possible.
Most government schools are location sensitive. Both primary and secondary are catered for students living in that catchment area. So do enquire and pay attention to the criteria of enrollment.
Hope the above helps.
Have a fun day with your FAMILY!
